Microsoft has done it again with a new landmark in computer entertainment.

Project Natal: A storm is coming!
Microsoft® wowed the entire world this week at Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2009 conference in Los Angeles with a demonstration of Project Natal, a motion sensing system for their XBox 360, the next cool thing in gaming since Wii! XBox Project Natal could take away entirely the need for a controller and thus allow players to be even more immersed in the virtual world, as demonstrates Peter Molyneux, developer of Fable, later in this article. Microsoft also promised that XBox Project Natal would include voice commands and facial-recognition as features.

"This is a pivotal moment that will carry with it a wave of change, the ripples of which will reach far beyond video games," said film director Steven Spielberg (Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Men in Black), presenting the XBox Project Natal at the E3 conference. Spielberg also pointed out that "people are too intimidated to pick up game controllers," and this is where Project Natal could change many things.

Project Natal: The Videogames Renaissance

Introducing Project Natal, a revolutionary new way to play... No controller required! See a ball? Kick it, hit it, trap it or catch it. If you know how to move your hands, shake your hips or speak, then you and your friends can jump right into the fun. The only experience you'll ever need with XBox Project Natal is the life experience.

The developer said that once the system scans your body shape, it could keep track of your movements even when they are temporarily blocked, such as by a passing pet or another player's arm. Imagine fighting with lightsabers in a StarWars game or dodging a nasty headcrab in Half-Life. Is it really the videogames Renaissance?

Imagine Playing Fable on "Natal"
Peter Molyneux, head of Lionhead Studios, kept himself busy working on a project of his own, and using Microsoft's newest tech code-named Project Natal. Molyneux is famous in the gaming industry for his God games (Dungeon Keeper, Populous, Black & White), and more recently, for Fable, a cross-platform RPG launched back in 2004, followed by a highly anticipated sequel in October 2008.

In the video bellow, we see Peter Molyneux at E3, presenting a marvelous technology demo named Milo, in which Claire interacts with a young boy and passes him virtual items from real life. Huh? Anyway, Peter confirmed that the demo was in fact the long running Project Dimitri started in 2001 and reported canceled for several times.

The Dimitri Project had become the Milo technical demo used by Microsoft® to demonstrate XBox Project Natal capabilities. Milo is an advanced AI (Artifical Intelligence) that reacts to your body movements and facial expressions. A program that recognizes people, introduces himself and allows people to have a conversation with him. Drawing pictures on paper and holding to "Natal" allows it to scan the image and create a representation onscreen that Milo can give his opinion on, as you will see in a second.

Goodbye Wii!
Microsoft hasn't yet given any specific information when XBox Project Natal will be available or how much will it cost but we think it's reasonable to say goodbye to our Wii system.

If Project Natal works as promised, then the XBox gaming experience would be far as close as you can get to the real thing without a holodeck. We would all love to one day have our own personal holodeck... XBox Project Natal takes the first measurable step in that direction. Done and done!
